What is Heat Treating?

Heat treating metals is a vital step in our manufacturing process. In simple terms, heat treatment is the process of heating a metal, holding it at that temperature, and then cooling it back. Throughout the procedure, the metal will undergo changes in its mechanical properties due to the high temperatures altering its microstructure. The final outcome of heat treating depends on various factors, including:

  • The time of heating
  • The time of keeping the metal at specified temperatures
  • The rate of cooling
  • The type/size of metal

Throughout the course of heat treating, a metal’s properties – magnetism, hardness, ductility, resistance to corrosion – will constantly change. In some cases, a metal component may go through several heat treating procedures. Some alloys used in the aerospace industry may undergo as many as six different heating treatments for optimization. The four most common types of heat treating are:

Choosing the perfect heat treating method really depends on the type of metal and the required properties. Don’t hesitate to talk things over with our knowledgeable staff first. Give us a call at 573-646-3996 or contact us online.

What Metals Can Be Heat Treated?

About 80 percent of heat treated metals are different grades of steel and, although ferrous metals account for the majority of heat-treated materials in our shop, the following metals can be heat treated:

  • Aluminum
  • Magnesium
  • Copper Alloys
  • Nickel
  • Titanium
  • Brass

In addition to heating treating, Roberson Machine Company provides the following value added services:

What Are the Benefits of Heat Treating at Roberson Machine Company?

The heat treating process offers a variety of benefits, making it a reliable technique for various industries. Here are some of the key advantages of heat treating metals:

  • Improving Workability and Machinability
  • Our heat treating procedure improves the workability of your part by removing internal stresses from previous fabrication processes. This stress relieving prevents distortion, warping, or cracking of the part, particularly in applications where it’s used heavily and a dependency of other components.

  • Enhancing Wear Resistance and Durability
  • The heat treating process creates a surface layer that is harder and more wear-resistant than the core of the material. This is vital in industrial applications where components experience friction, abrasion, or wear, like gears, bearings, and cutting tools.

  • Improving Hardness and Strength
  • Heat treating significantly enhances the hardness and strength of metals. By controlling the heating and cooling rates, the metal’s internal structure is modified, leading to boosted mechanical properties without compromising the material’s integrity.

  • Precise Control of Material Properties
  • Heat treating offers a heightened level of control over the properties of a metal like hardness, tensile strength, and toughness. This permits us to tailor the metal to meet your company’s specific requirements for different applications and sectors.

  • Boosting Ductility and Toughness
  • Certain heat treatment processes, like annealing, increase the toughness of metals, making them less brittle and less prone to cracking. This is crucial in applications where components need to absorb energy, such as structural parts.
