Milling is the most common type of CNC machining. It is a versatile production machining process that can perform many different types of cuts on a workpiece. In the production machining and milling process, a CNC milling machine uses a rotating cylindrical cutter to move along multiple axes and create slots, holes, and details in material to turn it into a mechanical part, vehicle, or other finished product. The CNC milling machines we use in our facilities are:
- 2 axis machines for production machining and milling can cut holes and slots in the x- and z-axes (horizontal and vertical) and only in one direction.
- 3 axis machines for production machining and milling add the y-axis. This is our most common milling machine. It cuts vertically and in any direction, but a circular or spherical object will need to be done one half at a time because it’s not possible to cut from below.
- 4 axis machines for production machining and milling add the ability to rotate the x-axis, similar to our lathes.
- 5 axis machines for production machining and milling add the ability to rotate both the x- and y-axes. This is our most complete milling machine, allowing us to shape virtually anything.
Production Machining and Milling: What Are CNC Milling Machines Used For?
CNC milling machines are particularly useful in three production machining and milling scenarios:
- Drilled Holes
Drilling creates a hole and tapping adds threads. Drilling focuses on both the diameter and depth of the hole, measurements that are useful further along in the production machining and milling run. Through and tapped holes are the most common way to assemble parts.
- Bored Holes
Enlarging an existing hole using a drill and boring bar with a cutting tool forms a precise inner cavity within a workpiece, also useful further along in the production run. Boring allows parts to be assembled properly and tightly, achieving precisely tight tolerances for diameter.
- Flat Surfaces
CNC face milling puts flat surfaces on a workpiece, creating a finished sealing surface so flat that potential leak issues are nearly eliminated.

For longer production machining and milling runs, we set most of our CNC machines on a 0.005” tolerance or rely on changing the machine if we run a tighter tolerance. On shorter runs, our CNC machines can cut as precise as 0.001,” or about a fourth of the width of a human hair.
